History of Gyeongbokgung (경복궁)

Gyeongbokgung (경복궁) means ‘the place with blessed and prosperous’. Since everyone is already full of virtue, we bless all the kings of the new dynasty Joseon, that it may prosper for ten thousand years.

History of Gyeongbokgung

Joseon dynasty is the last dynasty in Korea. Gyeongbokgung Palace was built as the main palace of the Joseon dynasty in 1395 during the reign of King Taejo who is the founder of the Joseon dynasty. During the Joseon dynasty, there are 5 palaces, which are the main palace, and 4 detached palaces that can be used for an emergency situation. Therefore, the Gyeongbokgung palace is more strict and dignified than others. Unlike the other palace, this palace must meet all specifications as the main palace. For example, it was built on the ground level, and also three gates to enter the main hall called Geunjeongjeon should be aligned.

However, it was burnt down in 1592 during the Japanese invasion and left in ruin for about 300 years. Changdeokgung palace which is the detached palace played a role as the main palace. During the reign of King Gojong, it was restored in 1868, so Gyeongbokgung palace was used as the main palace once again. When Gyeongbokgung palace was not harmed, there were more than 350 buildings at this site (410,000 square meters).

During the Japanese colonial period, this beautiful palace was destroyed little by the Japanese. Most of the buildings were torn down by the Japanese, leaving only 10 percent as it was. Since 1990, the restoration project has been carried out. It is still ongoing, and 45 percent of the original size is restored so far. The goal is to complete the entire palace by 2030 as it was. However, we don’t know it will take longer or shorter. I hope that you can visit Korea again to see the unharmed Gyeongbokgung palace!
